Spray foam is priced by the board foot: one square foot of area at one inch of depth. A 1,000 square foot wall sprayed at 2 inches is 2,000 board feet, and closed-cell runs a different rate than open-cell because the material cost is genuinely different. Blown insulation is priced per square foot at a target R-value, and the depth needed depends on what is already up there. The number that matters most in any insulation bid is the NET area: gross square footage minus the exclusions. A 1,200 square foot attic with a 200 square foot garage bay you are not touching is a 1,000 square foot job, and the estimate should show that math so the customer sees you measured instead of guessed.
